Get to Know Your Coach: Sylvie

Whether you’re a beginner looking for tips on climbing basics or a seasoned climber struggling to get past a plateau, our coach Sylvie will meet you where you’re at.

Through years of coaching, route setting, and climbing, Sylvie’s able to adapt each class to the climbers’ knowledge and capabilities. Sylvie doesn’t just coach – she sees the potential in every climber and creatively brings out that potential in ways that are specific to their goals.

Get to know Sylvie with this quick Q&A!

How long have you been coaching?

I have been coaching climbing for 3 years now, but before that I was a martial arts instructor for 2, so 5 years total.

Why did you start climbing?

The first time I climbed I hated it! But it was the perfect amount of challenging (both physically and mentally) to push me to my limit. I was hooked, and from that first time I knew it was something that I was going to give my all to get good at.

What’s your approach to coaching your climbers?

I like to see where people are at, watch them do a few climbs of varying grades to see where their skill level lies but also to have a korero about what is holding them back mentally and their goals for the future.

What’s your favourite part of climbing?

I climb for the endorphins, it keeps me sane. And outdoor sends!

“The dynamic between Emma and Sylvie has been amazing. Emma’s brother even joined for a bit when he saw how much fun they were having. Sylvie’s gone above and beyond to accommodate us. I couldn’t ask for a better fit.” – Kara McMurray, Emma’s (left) mum

Sylvie currently coaches our Rock Hoppers classes and the Auckland Climbing Youth Development Club, and she offers private coaching for all age groups. If you or someone you know is interested in private coaching or classes, give us a ring. We’d love to share our experience!
